Introduction

Taxilit Technology ("Taxilit", "we", "us") operates the Taxilit rider app, the Taxilit Driver app and this website. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with and the choices you have.

We process personal information in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 and the regulations issued by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission. By creating an account or using our services, you acknowledge that your information will be handled as described here.

Information we collect

Depending on whether you ride or drive with us, we collect the following:

  • Account details: your name, email address, phone number, password (stored only in encrypted form) and profile photo.
  • Identity verification: for riders, an identity document and proof of address where verification is required; for drivers, your driver's licence and licence number, National Identification Number, date of birth and gender.
  • Vehicle information (drivers): make, model, year, colour, plate number, vehicle type, registration, insurance and roadworthiness documents, and photos of the vehicle.
  • Location: riders share their location while using the app to set pickup points and see nearby drivers. Drivers share their location continuously while they are online, including when the app is in the background, so we can offer trips, track trips in progress and keep riders updated.
  • Trip information: pickup and destination, the route driven, distance, duration, fares and fare breakdowns, ratings, messages exchanged in the app and any issues reported about a trip.
  • Payment information: wallet balance and transactions, top ups, fees and promotions applied. Card payments are processed by Paystack; we never see or store your full card number. Drivers also provide bank account details for withdrawals.
  • Device and usage information: notification tokens, device and app version details, and technical logs that help us keep the service reliable and secure.
  • Communications: messages you send to our support team or through our contact form, including any attachments.

How we use your information

  • To create and manage your account and verify your identity.
  • To match riders with nearby drivers, calculate prices before booking and compute the final fare from the actual trip.
  • To show live driver locations and arrival times during a trip.
  • To process payments, wallet top ups, driver earnings, withdrawals, promotions and cancellation fees.
  • To keep riders and drivers safe, investigate reported issues, and prevent fraud and misuse.
  • To send you trip updates, receipts, service messages and, where you have agreed, promotional messages.
  • To comply with our legal and regulatory obligations, including transport regulations in Lagos State.
  • To understand how our services are used so we can fix problems and improve them.

We rely on the performance of our contract with you, our legitimate interests in running a safe and reliable service, compliance with legal obligations and, where required, your consent.

How we share your information

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only in the following situations:

  • Between riders and drivers: once a trip is assigned, the rider sees the driver's first name, photo, rating, vehicle details and live location, and the driver sees the rider's first name, photo, rating and pickup point. Phone numbers are shared only once the trip is assigned so you can contact each other. A rider waiting for a driver who is finishing another trip never sees details of that other passenger.
  • Regulators: completed trip records are reported to the Lagos State Ministry of Transport through its DriveIQ platform as required by law. These records include the driver's licence number and vehicle registration, the start and end locations and times, distance, fare and the passenger's name, phone number and email address.
  • Service providers who help us run Taxilit, under agreements that require them to protect your information: Paystack (payments), Google (maps, routing and address search), Amazon Web Services (hosting and file storage), MongoDB (database hosting), Brevo (email delivery) and Expo (push notifications).
  • Law enforcement and legal requirements: when we are required to by law or a valid legal process, or when it is necessary to protect someone's safety.
  • Business changes: if Taxilit is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, your information may transfer to the new owner, who will remain bound by this policy.

How long we keep your information

We keep your information for as long as your account is active and for as long as we need it to provide the service, resolve disputes, meet our legal, tax and regulatory obligations and enforce our terms. Trip and payment records are kept for the periods required by law.

When you delete your account, we remove or anonymise your personal details. Some records, such as completed trips and payments, are retained where the law requires it or where they are needed to protect riders, drivers and Taxilit.

How we protect your information

We use encryption in transit, encrypted password storage, strict access controls and regular reviews of our systems. Identity and vehicle documents are stored privately and can only be viewed through links that expire after a few minutes.

No system is completely secure. If we become aware of a breach that affects your personal information, we will notify you and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission as required by law.

Your rights

Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 you have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correct information that is inaccurate or incomplete. You can update most of your profile in the app.
  • Ask us to delete your information. Riders can delete their account in the app under Profile → App Settings. Riders and drivers can also request deletion at taxilit.com/delete-account.
  • Object to or restrict certain processing, and withdraw consent where we rely on it.
  • Receive your information in a portable format.
  • Complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission if you believe we have not handled your information properly.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below. We may need to verify your identity first.

Location and device permissions

The rider app asks for your location while the app is in use. The driver app asks for location access "all the time" so that trips continue to be tracked accurately and offers keep arriving while the app is in the background; location is only collected while you are online. You can change these permissions in your phone settings at any time, although some features will not work without them.

Children

Our services are not intended for anyone under 18. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has created an account, please contact us and we will remove it.

International transfers

Some of our service providers store or process information outside Nigeria. When this happens, we take the steps required by Nigerian data protection law to make sure your information receives an adequate level of protection.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we make significant changes, we will let you know in the apps or by email before they take effect. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last updated.
